Diesel Shaver - Remember the Ancaster Spirit

Remember the Ancaster Spirit,

Well before the pool was built onto the schools arm,

when the roads gravel rambled off to the local dump or on further to the site of
Copetown motorbike races, a forgotten fellow walked the country miles.

He slept in the fields of our fathers work, awoke with the dancing sun, waited for our
lovers. He wandered the halls of our homes, swung the bats at the diamond, saw the fruit trees bloom over and over. Knew the last man hanged in Canada was delivered to his noose in Ancaster. That ghost waited for the day the last rooms of the old Catholic school would fall off the edge, so cracked and hanging. He sat at the grain mills river and knew the way of bakers and farmers. Without a word he saw many places change hands and names.

The Hermitage ruins has his Christian name scratched into its old blocks, the nearby spring washed his hands. That Ancaster spirit still marks out the older places, the radial lines,
the drug store (dated by its tube tester) and the children's faces now grown and
gone.

Without prejudice he watches the next generations, forever. The spirit
of Ancaster.

Love - Deisel Shaver.

Easter Sunday April 8th

Happy Easter to all, and as I sit and enjoy this lovely sunny long weekend – with not a whole planned and enjoyable family times, yard cleanup and some early planting.

I think about how lucky we are in Ancaster sometimes seems a little Utopian – I know my neighbors and (sometimes) wave and the masses of people that go by my house on their way to the Bray Path.

I can’t help but think about the recent news stories concerning homes in the Meadowlands, and wonder how the neighbors did not have any idea.  Groups of men in and out of the house at strange hours, the comings and goings must have been very strange.  For a seemingly well to do neighborhood – it at least causes my eyebrows to curl.

Some victims worked directly for the organization’s stucco businesses, while others were farmed out to different companies, including a lumber yard and a tiling contractor.

Gang members lived the high life. In the fall of 2009, Ferenc and Gyula Domotor moved into new houses, each worth nearly $500,000, down the street from each other in Ancaster.

Over the course of the next year, even as police investigated, the Domotor organization continued to bring workers into the country and even branched into a new type of crime: tipping over Canada Post boxes at night and rooting through the mail to steal and cash cheques.

The really scary thing is that these people were running multiple Contractor business’s – stucco and tiling and dealing with local people and coming in and out of our homes.

How do you select a Contractor – from a mess of Ad’s in the back of the Newspaper?  No you should call friends and people you know – people with personal references – like the Ancaster Factor.  www.ancasterfactor.ca.

Every person on the business directory at the Ancaster Factor – I know and personally vouch for – honestly.  J - jojo

2012-03-24

I never realized I felt so connected to my website - until someone tried to Hi-Jack the idea and name.

The Ancaster Factor has been an active website since the early 1990's.The Factor began as a way to track friends email address's when I was living abroad. It quickly picked a lot of interest. Ancaster people all over the world found it an easy place to connect with old friends.

I have spent many hours and much money keeping the website up since 1996 when the programming was still dos based and I had to memorize the html code. I have always looked at the AncasterFactor as a fun way of teaching myself about "Web Misstressing", it forces me to keep current with new technology and I enjoy it as a hobby.

The old Factor was brought to life in the days before Facebook, and the core group of Ancaster Factorites - were mostly friends from AHVS. This was a well and good until it got a little popular and my inbox always had a backlog of requested posts. That was the "old" Ancaster Factor and manual updates are no longer required. Facebook Groups are a great way for everyone to have control over their content. Please join the AncasterFactor group on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/ancasterfactor

So onto the New Factor - Ancaster is getting so big these days that it is hard to tell which companies are truly local.

As an Ancaster home owner I quickly realized that reliable or available Contractors were hard to find, and as a Mom I wanted to know who was coming into my home and feel comfortable with them.

I found that print Ad's in the back of the Ancaster News were useless to determine if a contractor should be selected or not, or whether a purchase was of value.
I want to make a difference by purchasing local and sustainable products.

Whether is it contractors, services or local meat and produce we are all accountable… and make choices every day at the cash register.

Thus the Ancaster Factor – Second Generation - Business & Services Listings came to life.

March 23 - Finally an apology

Hi
Joanne;

Reading through the message again I can understand why you had the reaction you did to it. The team that runs the site truly does apologize if you were in any way put out by this. I
know you may not believe this but it was never the intent. Let me explain - the
group wanted to put up a discussion page - much in line with the Reunion page
that exists there. When asked why people would want to do that it was because
people in Ancaster have a 'connection' or 'factor' which was the spirit of
togetherness having come from Ancaster. Very much the way you began your page
years ago. Seeing that you parked the idea 5 years ago and suggested that
facebook was the place to go it was suggested that, because Ancaster.com
was already using that as the commenting engine, a page could be created on the
site to allow those who wanted to keep in touch the ability to do so. Not to
hi-jack your page - but to offer a spot as it suggested using
facebook. Should we have tried to contact you to discuss - in hind
site absolutely - but in all honesty it was never anticipated that it would be
offensive. Quite the opposite it was intended to be complimentary which is why
your site was linked back to.

I do also agree the wording could/should have been better - but wholeheartedly the message you interpreted was not the intent. The Ancaster.com team is not benefiting by this in
any way - just as you were not. I know they are working today to change the land
page path as well to disassociate the name completely.

In light of the spirit this was created we discussed what we could do to make amends - apart from an apology and rebranding. Here's what we came up with: We took the fact that your site was
not updated since 2007 to mean you had abandoned it and were no longer
interested. I take it from your email that is not the case and that you are
actively working on the site. What we've suggested is to turn the current page
at ancaster.com/the-factor into a profile page on ancasterfactor that you can update. It can be a profile about your site and a permanent spot that will direct traffic your way to highlight your new site. You'll benefit by getting any traffic that may already be going to that
page, as well as significant SEO 'juice' which will make your site rise to the
top of google search terms for whatever tags you want us to put on the
page.

Let me know what you think
Joanne.

March 20 - JoJo Still Mad

Pete

Whether you intended to infringe on copyright or not – the fact is that you did - at the
moment when you supplied a link to my unaltered page and called your site the
permanent location of the “New Ancaster Factor” I have confirmed via lawyers
that you are in direct violation of copy right laws.

Ancaster Factor was designed built and maintained only by myself with a true community
spirit. I have spent a lot of time and money during the 11 years where I was
manually updated every single request of even people like you that I did not
know with no benefit to myself. And the last two years have been spent trying
to update it with new ideas that can benefit local Ancaster people. The site
was developed for my friends as I lived abroad for 11 years and many and most of
the people on the site I know – so when you contacted them my phone was
ringing.

The spirit in which Ancaster Factor came to be – was a truly selfless act on my part I have
never received nor asked for any money for being posted on my site – neither
have I ever asked for Ad dollars – all Ad’s on my current site are free to my
friends who have a business interest in Ancaster and are living in Ancaster.

I am insisting that you change the landing page from ancaster.com/the-factor to
completely disassociate yourself from my site.

The original owners of the Ancaster.com site were a whole lot smarter than you and understood
the true meaning of community spirit and cooperation – they contacted me
directly prior to going live with their site and asked if they could provide a
link to my site on the Ancaster.com page and I was honored to have my site
linked to Ancaster.com.

That you would hi-jack my site – is so outside of true Ancaster community spirit – all of
the people on the list did not join a random website of people they did not know
– they knew their own friends and could make the Ancaster Factor
Connection.

I think the real piss off is that you send a blind email from “pete” and you are a digital
ad exec, you are not uneducated about website development or design.

You took an idea and stole and represented it as your own, you and your colleagues had
intent to benefit from my concept and name with absolutely no alterations this
will only reflect badly on your own character and website.

Your lack of apology also does nothing to help the situation – I have proposed a town
flogging for Pete in light of no parade.

March 16 - Poachers Don't Care

Back

We're sorry you feel that way, Joanne. This wasn't intended
to infringe on a copyright, nor do to the creators feel it
does. Ancaster.com was built by friends with a community spirit. A site about Ancaster and for Ancaster. 100% + of all launch advertising was donated to the Ancaster community.
The email clearly states "The creator of the site decided to retire it back in 2007 with the hopes it would revive itself through Facebook." They make no claims to being that
creator.

The 'we' they refer to in the mail is the communal 'we' - the people of Ancaster who contributed to the page that was posted - and the individuals owners of the content there. As
with any community site it's the people who participate that make it what it
is.The ancasterfactor.com site clearly says it's no longer updating since 2007 and encourages the user base to go to facebook to keep in touch.

You'll note that the creators of the Ancaster.com site had used the wording
"The Factor" for which there is no copyright (differentiated from 'AncastorFactor.ca') - just as they do not claim copyright to the word 'Ancaster'.

Nevertheless given your unexpected strong objection to this, as a sign of good will, the creators
have modified the page to reflect it's true intention as they too wanted to disassociate themselves with someone who did not participate in the sprit in which this was created. As a sign of further good will I've asked them to put a disclaimer at the bottom of the page to make it clear they are not associated with your page.

Joanne, as stated, there was no intention to misrepresent the site as 'Ancasterfactor.ca'. With
clear links to that site and noting that it was stated that the current owner was not updating after 2007 in favour of facebook, the intention using facebook as recommended, was to have a spot for individuals wanting to keep in touch an opportunity to do so as a free community service.

We sincerely hope you enjoy the site for the purpose it was created. I know the people behind this
have put in a lot of effort to create a site for the community. The reward for them has been the ability for local clubs to use the site as a forum for fundraising efforts. We truly wish you all the best should you decide to revive the page and I know the creators of Ancaster.com will likely be the first to help you promote it, as they do with all Ancaster community
events.

I am so thoroughly pissed off with this – how dare you make these statements

Right now the page is pretty bare as we're restarting from scratch but we hope that you'll join us
to start where we left of with the old Ancaster Factor and create a lively place
for those of us who hold Ancaster and Ancaster residents (past and present) near
and dear to them.

“were restarting from scratch” and “where we left off”

And

“As we like to say at Ancaster.com, you can take the people out of Ancaster, but you
can't take the Ancaster out of the people.”

If I do not see a public apology and retraction I will call a lawyer – I have worked on this site
for 15 years and although it is not perfect it is mine.

You cannot take credit for it or mis-represent yourself as it’s previous owner.

Regards,

Pete – I think you should send a statement out – that you have infringed on copyright
material.

Please send an email retraction.

This is against the law.
